The Japanese attack on the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard in Honolulu on December 7, 1941 was described by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as "a day that will live in infamy" and led to the U.S. declaring war on Japan (and ultimately getting involved in World War II). You could say Pearl Harbor indirectly caused the atomic attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but don't misunderstand -- it's not like the government decided to use nuclear weapons on Japanese soil as "payback" for the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The link is the declaration of war against Japan that happened as a result of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Iif the Japanese had not attacked us, it's possible that the U.S. may have never gone to war against the Japanese.

The goal of the Allied Forces was to force Japan to surrender. Japan had invaded and conquered Korea (there was no North Korea and South Korea at the time) much of China, the Philippines, and many of the islands in the Pacific before Pearl Harbor was hit (very similar to the way Hitler invaded and conquered most of the European countries before the U.S. got involved). As a result, the first order of business was to liberate the islands and countries that Japan had conquered. The next objective was to cripple Japan's military and their ability to produce equipment, machinery, and weapons. Hiroshima and Nagasaki were chosen as targets because the vast majority of the factories producing war materials for the Japanese were based in those two cities. Tokyo and Kyoto were considered, but since the civilian casualties would have greatly outweighed the military advantages gained, they decided against bombing those cities.

Interesting piece of trivia: Did you know that the U.S. only had two nuclear weapons in 1945 and used them on Hiroshima and Nagasaki? The Allied threat to use nuclear weapons on other cities in Japan was a bluff. But hey, it worked.

We declared war on Japan when they attacked Pearl Harbor in Dec 1941. The war ended soon after we dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Aug. 1945.

You can find much information on the internet. For example, go to Japanese Navy messages 1921-1941. There is evidence that FDR knew for several years that Japan was going to attack us.

Good luck with your project.

You have to be more specific than that, you're talking about two events seperated by 4 years, and everything that happened in between was a reason for Hiroshima and Nagasaki. But to answear your question, no, in 1941 the only people with the technology to build a nuclear weapon where the germans.

Pearl Harbor put us into the war. After we beat them on every island in the Pacific ,the only one left was Honshu and Japan. The Govt. figured it would cost us at least 100,000 deaths to take Japan, proper so better to drop "The Bomb"on Hiroshima to make a point. They still didn't budge so we dropped one on Nagasaki. Then they gave up.
After Pearl Harbor ,General Doolittle led a bombing raid on Tokyo, and blew the heck out of it.That was just the beginning.Later we firebombed Tokyo and they still wouldn't give up.

The question is, why did the Empire attacked Pearl Harbour knowing that it's not necessary, it's a waste of time and resources, and it will cause a counterattack from the USA?

It wouldn't happen, unless someone threaten to destroy Japan unless the Empire do it.

That should be your research.
