If you take pictures, whatever is behind your subject is the background.

If you want your background blurred so the focus in on your subject, set you f-stop to the lowest number your camera will let you. Adjust your shutter speed accordingly.

Make sure that there is not any glaring light or your subject might squint and there could be some shadows.
