Whenever we hear the words "required" especially in an educational setting, most of us cringe. But, regarding musical training, it has been scientifically proven as well as practical that children or adults who study music have a higher IQ.

On a different level, we can think of music as another language. It has syntax and grammar just like any written language. Music also affects many people in different ways. Think about the way classical music affects people, country music, rock music, rap music, and then note the general attitude and/or lifestyle of each "people group" if I may use that phrase.

I myself believe that it should be a requirement but I am a musical person. I know it sounds funny but I think that music helps children to find out more about them self. It helps build character. Children who sing or play instruments have to work hard to become better so it teaches them the value of hard work. I think that children should defiantly have to have musical training in grammar school.

speaking as a private violin teacher I say simple music should be tought in k-elementry school, something like a recorder class. I think it would be great fun for the kids and it is a proven fact that music is good for the brain. And Im talking REAL music, not this rap and stuff, something from the 16th to 19th centuries.
