The crime rates in the closer-in neighborhoods of Prince George's County, MD have skyrocketed so I would not recommend moving there. Much of the city itself is safe and wonderful for living; I would avoid the Trinidad neighborhood, parts of Brentwood and the further-out sections of Anacostia (although the parts closer to Capitol Hill are just lovely). The Metropolitan Police have just released a new tool where you can type in an address and see what crimes have happened around it, over a date range that you specify. Link is below.
Like many other cities, the crime in DC is compartmentalized; most of the violent crimes happen in a small percentage of the city. Stay away from those few blocks and you will love it here. Do not let people scare you by saying the whole city is unsafe--- I have lived in the Columbia Heights neighborhood for about 14 years. It was pretty scary when I moved in! But the worst thing to happen to me was someone stole the stereo out of my car, about 10 years ago.

Stay out of NE and SE. Many sections of NW are probably not very safe also. You may want to look into living in Maryland or Virginia and commuting into DC if you are going to be working in the city. Silver Spring and Bethesda have lots of areas that are pretty decent that are also Metro-accessible.
