My sister is 16 and she and her friends are constantly messaging each other on their mobiles and talking on the internet. I can't for the life of me understand her when she messages me, it's all plz and 4rm and u. Everything that can be abbreviated is, and grammar and punctuation is just gone! Am I alone?

The net or chat english and the messaging English is interesting. Initially it sounds funny and confusing but when you get used to it, you would love it. It is possible to use both the traditional as well as modern usages with some practice.

Not only is it like learning a new language, but I find that it takes a lot of concentration to be able to translate!

In addition,It boggles my mind that some people consider it easier to type "Gr8" instead of "Great".

I see young people doing it all the time, so there must be something enjoyable about it. From what I gather, not only is it a difficult new language, but the conversations are inane!
