I would want to know the context, what was being discussed, why the speaker said that. But on the surface I can't imagine why a Christian would say Hate is OK.

Was he quiting Ecclesiastes 3:8? If so the Hate there is not the same as what we mean when we speak of Hating a person.

Sure, hate, anger, and such are not sin per se, but can be. It is not a sin to drive a Ford product, but you can sin while driving. As a Christian we are forbidden to hate the brothers (other Christians). War time is different, it requires a war attitude. Witnessing is different-it requires a totally different attitude. Many people (Christians included) take Scripture out of context. When Jesus told one of the disciples to bring a sword with them, it was not for peeling apples. They would need it for defense, and may possibly have to use it.

I'm a Christian, and I don't think hate is useful in anything. If hate is truly the opposite of love, then it deprives the object of hatred of any value other than contempt.

I think hatred is also self-destructive. It takes a lot of energy to actually hate something or someone, I think, and that's energy that can be used for better purposes.

I don't think so. (speaking from a Catholic viewpoint) the greatest commandment is to love others as yourself (paraphrased) so following the logic there is no room to hate. Easier said than done. But I can honestly say I don't hate anyone. I do tolerate some people and can't say I love everyone, but I think hate is a strong emotion to spend on anyone...

Yes, there is a time for hate -- as long as it's a SOMETHING that we hate, and not a SOMEONE.

For instance, I hate abortion. Every Christian should. It's one of the Top 5 most evil things in world history. There's nothing wrong with hating it.

But I don't hate people who support abortion. I disagree with them on this issue -- vehemently -- but I don't hate them because of it.

It's also okay to hate murder, rape, bigotry, and the like.

So yes, there is a time and a place for hate -- as long as it's directed at evil things and actions, but not at people.

Hi, I am a Christian, and hate is NOT okay, ever! Where in the Bible does it tell us to hate? Even Jesus himself spent time with tax collectors and sinners, with others questioning him about why he was dining with those kind of people. I wish that Christians would take the phrase "love your neighbor" more seriously.

Thanks for posting this. I agree that many Christians do hate in the name of God, and this gives us a bad name. They need to stop being so closed-minded.

Would Jesus have hated? From reading the gospels, the answer is no. He preached love, forgiveness and acceptance. This is why I am very often wary of Christians- very few of them behave in a Christ-like manner.

Thanks for asking, there is a time for hate, but never towards someBODY but someTHINGS. I hate sin, I really hate sin. I hate a lot of sins. I do not hate those who commit them because I commit them too. To hate someone for being a sinner is akin to hating myself.

As for people like Jeff Dahmer, O BinLaden (spit lama as I like to call him) Sudam, every serial killer, child rapist you can think of.....i don't hate them. I hate what they do, what they did, I hate that sin brought them down. I realize this may be different God forbid that someone come into my home and rape/kill one of my kids. I don't know how I would feel in a situation like that towards the perp.
