I have a [almost constant] pain that started in my hip, went to my knee and then the thigh. I haven't been able to walk properly for about 4wks now. Sometimes my thigh goes dead but no pins and needles afterward or my knee feels like it should be all swollen but it isn't but it does go hot. The doctor has given me strong painkillers but they're starting not to work and I don't really want to get addicted to them. I'm on the waiting list for an xray. Anyone else had these symptoms? What was it? Thanks

What did your doctor suggest it might be? It could be something inflamed and pressing on a nerve or muscle, or it could be a circulation problem. I have a herniated disk in my lower back that causes similar symptoms, it's called sciatica. You can read about that condition here. http://orthoinfo.aaos.org/fact/thr_report.cfm?Thread_ID=167
Rest is a good thing to let inflamation go down, and of course there are specific excercises to take the pressure off of particular area. Most important thing I can tell you is to talk to your doctor. If he doesn't answer your questions, ask again. You should be in control when visiting the doctor. Don't leave the office in the dark. Hope this helps.

You do not say how old you are?

I'm guessing you have not had a fall or injury that would explain the problem?
Is the pain relieved by anything? Like sitting or lying down, or made worse by walking etc?

If it started in your hip that is where the problem probably lies and the knee and thigh pain are either 'referred' pain or due to muscle spasm as you try to support and alleviate the pain in the hip.

Pins and needles could be related to a trapped nerve / sciatica but if you are waiting for an x-ray it sounds like your doctor thinks it is arthritis.

If it is very severe go to a casualty department in your local hospital- you may have to wait a few hours but you should get an x-ray the same day and maybe a diagnosis too.

Good Luck!

Well i wouldnt say its siatica at all.You havent bck pain have you ? If not its aint,i suffer with this and you get pain in the lower bck,in the hips and down the left leg, also numbness in the left leg to.Is your pain like this ? First you need to go bck to your gp and get a appt for an x-ray,you do not have to be on a waiting list at all for a simple x-ray ,do you live in the uk ?Have you recently injured youself,as this may be why you are having problems. It could be a trapped nerve, ligament damage. As you said try not to take to many pain killers as they do damage you liver if taken for a long time, also you will get used to them and they will not take no effect.Go bck to your gp or another gp and get a x-ray sorted out sooner.Dont forget theres no waiting list for a x-ray.Good Luck

Possibly sciatica...I suffer from it from time to time now due to a riding accident when I was 17 that caused nerve damage in back and hip. Did your doc have any ideas before he gave you the painkillers??? It depends on the type of painkiller as to how addictive they are...Codiene/morphine based ones are the worst but as long as you stick to the dose no worries.Did he suggest anti-inflammatory medication also??? Really I don't want to speculate...I hope all goes well.

You may want to have an MRI looking for narrowing of blood vessels and have him make positive its not DVT, but you say you are Not swollen but hot? Because thrombophlebitis and DVT comes with swelling, swelling can mean blood clot. Do you have any lumps under the skin? Are you seeing a primary doctor right now or a vascular specialist? Sorry that I couldn't give definitive answers.

There is two things. you need to ask, the same happen to me. could it be a clot? Have them check you for clots. they did me in my lower leg cause it was swollen and hot. and do you have vercous veins.
If not. is it cold and wet where you are? you could have arthits in your hip or joint.
Ask your doctor. And good luck with it.

Could be arthritis-or possibly an infection like Chronic Lyme Disease-if you are tired a lot be suspicious.but find a private doctor specialising in lyme disease if you arent happy with your GPs diagnosis.

Well for starters get another doctor.. because there is no excuse for having to wait to get exrays taken.. and they shouldn't be giving you pain killers unless they know what is wrong..
I would say you have a major pinched nerve somewhere and it should be taken care of as soon as possible.. get to the emergency room and get your self taken care of before you can't walk at all..

you may have a dislocated pelvis. i walked about for over a week with mine dislocated.
once that is not aligned it puts everything else out.
...i would forget the hospital ...go and see a chiropracter(bone crackingly bad spelling)
,he sorted me out in 10 mins.he will know whats wrong..
..hospital just gave me pain killers and sent me away......painkillers often make the injury worse ....i never take them my self, and i have slipped a disc before...

Does it have like a clicking noise when you move suddenly or sharply?... If it does have then its a ligament in your hip or maybe a trapped nerve... have you played vigourous sports or had vigorous sex, that could too affect it
