Karma is said to be the cause, the sole precurser and generator of its effect. What you do now shall bear fruit hereafter ; this is the concept of Karma. Odinary people do believe in it. This is the inspiration behind life. Scientists do believe in it most sincerely. The laity thinks, as you sow, so you reap. The scientist thinks, The world of events are threaded by cause and effect. The event now is the effect of preceeding event and is the cause of its succeding event, the events are connected together in one way fashion through ever flowing 'time'; flowing only in forward direction and never flowing backwards. But The Buddha, the founder of Buddhism,The Mahavir Jeen , founder of Jainism and the and the holiest scripture The Bhagwat Gita of so-called Hinduism discard Karma and seek liberation though relinquishing karma. As a small example, a scientist believes, as much as an ordinary folk, if you throw a stone up in an angle, it would take a curved path ( parabola more correctly) and a good highschool fellow coould do all the calculation about position and velocity, direction etc. of the stone pebble until it goes high up, and returns to hit the ground. In short, the future is predictable with a modest degree of accuracy, by the people in the know, only with a little knowledge of acceleration due to gravity. But a closer look falsifies this notion. Suppose a flying insect intercepts the pebble thown; and it changes course immediately as a result of collision. Does the law of gravitation fail ? No. But the prediction about the pebble fails. The scientist argues back; the insect had not been accounted for , in the begining. then how many uncertainities the scientist should guard against; or the common man, for that matter ? So neither the astronomer, nor the astrologer is ' qualified' to predict future; even if astronomy and astrology may both be taken for granted! This is how Karma is falsified. A sober drives in a narrow lane and a drunk dashes against him from the front. Whose Karma is this and who is paying for it, anyway ?What Buddism and Jaininsm advocated renunciation of karma for sake of liberation from karma-bandhan, the viscious cycle of karma and its phal (effect, fruit). A viscious circle indeed. A pundit admonished a butcher , " Look, in this life, you butchered the goat, in the next life after death, the goat shall be the butcher and you would be the goat , only to be halaled! So refrain from this profession." The butcher immediately retorted, " Look Bhahmin, cant you see into our previous lives, this goat was the-then butcher and poor I was the goat . I am sorry, but you need better your training." Rebirth or no rebirth, life is a borrowed time, for one and all, a viscious circle. So the wise men, The Buddha the Mahavir Jeen and many a great souls, munies, rishies and monks and mahants denounced karma, advocated austerity, tapasya for liberation. You ask anybody in India within a stone's throw , whether Lord Krshna, the fullest avtar of God had the same view ? 99.99% shall say you yes and refer to The Bhagwat Gita, the sacred-most scripture of ours and recite some verses illustrating the glory of karma. But the single most important stanza is ' Karmanye ba adhikarh te, ma phalesu kadacana' - you are at liberty to do what you choose, but the result is not your right ! The karma and karmaphal are never, never interdependent and altogether unrelated. Then why do you indulge in karma at all. Thsi was answered by Lord Krshna, Krishna Vasudeva, better call him the leader, a human hero only, rather than God Himself. He simply played the many roles man has to play, a son, a brother, a husband, a father, a soldier and a king; a friend and an enemy , as and when the current situation demanded, according to the innnermost conscience. Sincere involvement, not escapism is the sole way to get rid of borrowed time. Krshna vasudeva was the embodyment of the character and Krshna Dwipayana, was the character painter, the author. Krshna means the force of attraction. "Twaya Hrusikesh hrudi sthitena, yatha prabaktoham tatha karomi" - be guided by the inner light, always. " Sarvadharman parityaya mamekam sharanam braja, Aham twam sarvapapebhyah rakhyishami ma such" - Relinquish all faith and religion and only follow the inner ligt it would never fail you . More than that; it would save you from earlier sins ( albeit making you pay for it, with smile of course, not with tears). This is the provision for the moderates; you know, in every faith there are moderates and extremists. The extremist followers fail the leader in his mission , by streatching his dictats too much. The moderates fail his mission like slow poison. Therefore the world is always a failure; albeit the brightest thing about it. For, had it been sucess, it would have been static. Because the heap of sand spills over , over a period of time, you are allowed to be a leader too, to make a heap again. Act now!
