Can anyone tell me if there is a limit and if so what is the limit on buying cigarettes and spirits on board a plane flying back to the UK from an EU country

Its 2 cartons per person in your checked bag as well as your carry on. Anything above that is confescated. Check the customs websites for the countries you are travelling to and from.

There is no limit as long as you can prove that they are for your own use and provided that they are bought in a local shop and not duty free. Youu can only bring back 200 from a duty free shop. Its exactly the same as if you were viositing France by ferry boat. There is no limit.

You are all missing the very important point. IF YOU BUY CIGARETTES OR SPIRITS IN A NON DUTY FREE SHOP WITHIN THE EU THEN THERE IS NO DUTY TO PAY IN THE UK. You can bring as much as you like back as long as its for your own use.

according to a sign in a shop window in Greece it's 8000, whether customs see it that way is another thing, I'm pretty sure it's a lot more than 200 if bought in the EU. I've brought back a thousand before and it wasn't questioned.

2 cartons of 200 each is the limit no matter how you bring them in or where you fly in from.

the limit is classed as for personal use and is generally 3200 for cigarrettes

3200,ciggies of the same brand.otherwise if you get stopped you might lose them?
