I feel like my bladder is going to explode! Last time I had to go to the hospital to have a catheter put in and I really don't want to go that route again. Thanks for your input and suggestions.

You mean opiate painkillers? Well that is a side effect; obviously your pain is agonizing if you needed a catheter. You can't urinate; a ruptured bladder will either kill you or make life hell. Without the painkillers, the pain could kill you by causing a heart attack. The catheter doesn't look like such a bad solution. Hang in there, I know life can suck.

Painkilllers and post anesthesia slow everything down. I wouldn't be surprised if you're also having trouble with constipation or hard stools. Cut back on the painkillers is one solution. But another problem could be that you just have urinary retention as a chronic problem. For this there's Detrol LA and another drug that I can't remember the name off hand. I should know it as alot of my patients are on it. If this persists, you should see a urologist.

ALL narcotics can cause this. Narcotics are a system depressant...meaning they slow down all bodily functions. It can also burn when you finally do urinate. Drink some hot herbal tea with lemon. They are both diuretics. If that doesn't help (with plenty of water--sometimes you just have to really fill the bladder up to get it to start) then talk to your doctor about maybe adding some Lasix to help you get the fluid out. IF your blood pressure can handle it.

Do not take diuretics or parasympathometic drugs. This can only make the situation worse. Drop the dosage of narcotic. If you have to take or inject a strong narcotic, you may need an indwelling catheter.

Ask your doc about getting another kind of pain killer.
