People in tx should know what these are. They are a type of small very ugly catfish that live in abandoned stock tanks and other areas of still water. Ive heard they were called polywogs but I dont think thats right.

They are the dreaded mud cat, some times called a polliwog. They will take over a pond and the only way to get rid of them is drain and dig out the pond/tank.

Polywogs or tadpoles sounds like a good bet. Frogs could easily lay their eggs in a stock tank. They're black, and look somthing like a catfish. Are any of them sprouting legs?

Those are water dogs. They are also called mud puppies, sallies, poly wog, and plenty other colorful names. They are especially good bait for bass during pre-spawn through post spawn period. Big bass just hate them and try to kill them very aggressively because they steal eggs off the spawning nest.
