Be on the lookout from sunset to midnight and right before and after sunrise. The deer are out the most then. If you do see one, remember deer seldom run alone. If you see one deer, others may be nearby. When driving at night, use high beam headlights when there is no oncoming traffic. The high beams will better illuminate the eyes of deer on or near the roadway. If you see one, slow down and blow your horn with one long blast to frighten the deer away. And if one runs in front of you, brake firmly, but stay in your lane. Many serious crashes occur when drivers swerve to avoid a deer and hit another vehicle or lose control of their cars.

Good question!

They sell things that mount on your front bumper and make a whistling sound the deer don't seem to like. It is actually better to hit the deer than to try to avoid it. Some of those back country roads have steep embankments, you could go off one and no one would find you, the worst case is you hit someone head on. I know the first reaction is to try to avoid something, so you need to train your mind to go against the grain. In the evenings and mornings when they are mostly out you need to use more caution, drive more cautiously and slowly. Deer season is open in many states now, so you are going to see them running across roads at anytime.

One thing to do if you do see a deer in the road or close to the road is stop your car and shut your lights off for a minute, let the deer walk across the road. I came across my first deer a few minutes ago and it wouldnt leave while the lights were on. It kind of mesmerizes them. Then I remembered someone told me to turn the lights out, it sort of knocks them out of their trance.

Remember, we took over alot of their land, so we have to just be careful and watch for them.
