The number of stairs is always in relation to the ceiling height, so a home with two floors and 8-foot ceilings will have fewer stairs than a home with 10-foot ceilings. The height of each stair should be around 7-inches, so divide the floor-to-floor height (in inches) by 7. For example, a home with a floor-to-floor measurement of 114 inches (9'-6") should have 16 stairs. Also useful to know is that the riser (vertical part of the stair) plus the tread (the part you put your foot on) should total 17-1/2 inches. Hope this helps.
