I think it is a word which has taken on new connotations of late. Generally speaking, it is the approach or view you adopt towards something or someone which in turn leads you to behave towards it or them in a certain way.
However, when people say of someone "he has attitude", it tends to mean that he is someone who acts aggressively and in a way which is deliberately calculated to annoy those around him. For example, you, as a motorist are driving along when someone (young, hale and hearty, so with no physical excuse) will step out into the road before you, causing you to stop, and will then walk deliberately slowly so that you have to wait to move on. That is attitude.

I liked the note in the above answer
saying it was a bad thing to have,
when people say you have 'attitude.'
You can have a good attitude,
say at work, when you approach things with
"let's get this job done together!"
Attitude is the general state of mind one has,
and it can be labelled good or bad, or inbetween.
Some people have cheery attitudes, some cynical,
some pessimistic, and some optimistic,
and all of us have a wide variance in attitude,
depending on the circumstances.
Attitude is learned and it is genetic too.
If you have a great attitude,
being around negative, pessimistic, argumentative people
will finally bring you around to one that is less than great.
The converse is true. Wear a smile!
Your attitude is often described by how you approach things.
Your attitude is often judged by the expression on your face,
by your dress, by your body language.
People with bad attitudes seem not to smile,
but to look "bad, mad, or mean."
IF you listen to songs with bad attitudes,
if you hang with people with bad attitudes,
if you feel a victim, wronged, taken advantage of,
then you will be ONE of them with bad attitude.
Life is what it is, so you might as well have a good attitude,
handle whatever comes your way,
and make the best out of what you get.
That's a good attitude, to live everyday, the best you can,
making the world a better place in your own little way.
"When life gives you lemons, make lemonade."
Start looking at the attitudes of those around you.
Do you want their attitudes?
Are they going to change your attitude, or you theirs?
YOU be the person YOU want to be!
Get your attitude right, and you will be happier.

Most people define "attitude" as someone who has a nasty demeanor - they act mean, spiteful toward someone else with no provocation by the other person.
Like in "She has a rotten attitude".
Or it could mean the opposite: "He has such a good attitude toward his work"
Dictionary meaning:
1. A position of the body or manner of carrying oneself: stood in a graceful attitude. See Synonyms at posture.
2. a. A state of mind or a feeling; disposition: had a positive attitude about work.
b. An arrogant or hostile state of mind or disposition.
3. The orientation of an aircraft's axes relative to a reference line or plane, such as the horizon.
4. The orientation of a spacecraft relative to its direction of motion.
5. A position similar to an arabesque in which a ballet dancer stands on one leg with the other raised either in front or in back and bent at the knee.

Attitude is a way in which we choose to respond to something. For example somebody bumps into you and apologies you can either say "that's ok" or "can't you be more careful". As you can see one is more agreeable than the other. In that senario we choose our response and that is our attitude that we have chosen to take in that situation. Hence the saying "choose your attitude"
