Check In opens 3 hrs prior to flight. Allow at least another hour on top of that and another hour for delays on the M4/M25 (if you are travelling by that route).

Make sure you are at the airport by 10am in the morning okay ? Get on flight link/National Express coaches,Train (all nice) by 6am to be safe, sound and sure of your arrival, that way you have no worries about your flight , you can be at Heathrow, have some breakfast, nose aound the shops in Terminal four, relax and just have a nice time before getting on the plane.Thats what I always do when flying out of Heathrow or Gatwick. Never had a bad journey yet.

International Check-in cut-offs for most airports, US and abroad is 2 hrs prior to departure. So, to get through security, I would suggest arriving 3 to 4 hrs or more before your flight, that will allow enough time to stand in line, since International travel requires more check in procedures. Have your passport out and available for the ticket agent. The UK-US screening may still be more thorough so, make sure you check the website for UK's Transportation Security Administration for guidelines for your checked and carry on luggage. From the US, all liquids must be in quart size zip-loc bags, that includes lip gloss, hand sanitizer, and you can only carry on 3oz travel size toiletries and smaller in your carry on. No water is allowed through security, however you can purchase on the other side. Our website is http://www.tsa.gov

i am sure for flights to America you need to allow 3hrs before flight. it could be a good idea to just give Heathrow a call on the morning of your flight to doulbe check - esp if your flight is delayed they will be able to let you know and you wont have to arrive quite so early then.

If you think about it, they day will actually be longer than you think - America is 5-7 hours behind us, so it may seem that you are getting there 4-5 hours after you set out - & it's still the same time as the time you left Britain. (Example 3pm in Britain 3.5 hours flight time, would be 6.30pm here, but 1.30-3.30pm in U.S., so you'll have to go through the whole afternoon again. It's called jet lag).
