Some organizations recommend that plastic water bottles be used only once before recycling, but not because re-use is likely to cause carcinogenic compounds to leach from the plastic bottles into the liquids they hold (a rumour which was in circulation recently because of one American student's thesis). The concern is that people (particularly children) can too easily spread and ingest bacteria from their hands and mouths by re-using bottles without properly washing them or allowing them sufficient time to dry. However, I was rather concerned recently that I could taste the plastic appreciably from a new bottle of water and felt a certain suspicion about what I might be ingesting.

It would be wise to give them a good wash with hot soapy water every few days or so. I know of someone who worked in field sales and carried various bottles of water in her car - she would just grab one and swig back the water as she needed it - there was always one with some in it. One day she felt unwell - stomach ache and a bit sickly and all was explained when she noticed the fine layer of faint green algae growing inside a few of the water bottles...eugh! She recovered and was fine - no lasting damage, but it made her a little more conscientious with her car tidying...Bizarrely the products she was selling were hygiene products for hospitals!

After using a water bottle for three days you should dispose of it. The tap water grimes are still there. Although if you wash the bottles after use, they're good for at least five more days.

Hi! My wife and I do the same thing! Last Spring we bought 4 bottles of Dasani water and we just keep refilling them with a Britta pitcher. We save TONS of money this way AND its like recycling the bottle over and over!
I say go for it!

I do, but I make sure that I wash the bottle thoroughly after a weeks usage. By thoroughly, I mean in steaming hot water and anti-bacterial detergent (i'm just paranoid) Also rinse it out well every day before use. Should be fine. Afterall, I'm sure you use other plastic tupperware again and again? Good way of recyling.

Well I have used the same plastic bottle for some time, and no after effects, yet, Just make sure you wash it as well as you wash your other utensils, no difference. Saves a lot more plastic going to the tip.

Yes it is. My Dad has been using the same empty plastic squash bottle to take water or diluted squash to work for months now.

I do. My current water bottle (which I keep in the fridge at home) is about 6 months old.

it should be, ive don it before, as long as you wash them. watch for leaks though, sometimes ive re used a bottle and its leaked in my bag, very annoying!
if i were you, id change the bottle every few weeks, because you dont really want to be using the same old bottle, it might start to look a bit battered!
