You know you have the right god when he hates all the same people you do.
BTW, your quote was excellent. It's the second thing I've been inspired to "save" from this forum
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

Toxic Religion - they have blinders on and have lost sight of what true faith is and have focused more on doctrine.
There was an interesting book written by Richard Bach "One", it is a novel which involves a plane and quatum physics and going into paralle lives. In one scene Richard and his wife Leslie come upon a monk with this book that is glowing. The read over his shoulder and this book is about love, harmony and peace. Richard gets very excited and wants to take the book back. The monk then questions him on what he is going to call this - Richard is confused and states he will not call it anything he just wants to show the love - the monk goes on to question him and states that the masses that will adopt this point of view will want to name it - fine Richard states we will call it the pages. The monk ask if he would be willing to fight for the pages and defend its words - yes - at this time he realizes then he is defeating the words of the book
You do not find faith in religion or a book. These things can guide you but they should never become more important than the Creator of all things. True faith is found in your heart.
Why do people hate and even kill - for most of them I believe that their intent is honest they think they are defending God. God does not need defending and perhaps they are just lost in religion.
This thought process is just that, an opionion. It will be interesting to see some of the other wise answers. Good question

Religion tends to amplify out-group hostility. Religions encourage their followers to just have faith and not reason. It also tends to teach their followers that man is basically evil, the whole world is going downhill fast, and they are the only oasis of truth in the whole lot. So, just like with the Nazis, you get people blindly following their leaders and attacking those outside the group. Even those religions who teach "love thy neighbor" seem to do so only to the extent that they think they can convert others. After that, it turns to "don't thrown pearls before swine", "don't be unequally yoked", "an eye for an eye", and "take up the holy armor and sword of god". This is also amplified by religions teaching that this life is only a test and if they die supporting their religion they'll get a huge reward of Heaven or 72 virgins or they'll get their family into Heaven. Such people don't mind wasting this life in hopes of another one.

Some people cannot handle the fact that there are always going to be some people that don't agree with your religion, if you have one. Personally, as a Christian, I think that anyone killing in the name of Christianity isn't really a Christian at all.....

This is perhaps the biggest problem I have with religion. It has to be fanatics. Christianity preaches love and peace what religion preached kill if you don't agree with my choice.

They would hate and kill anyway. Religion just seems to be a good cover to them. They are stupid. There are many of them living in the U.S., not just the Middle East.

It's easy to carry anything too far. Especially when you believe that God is not only on your side, but that God hates people who have different beliefs from yours. This leads to blind fanaticism. They cease to see people of other religions as fully human.

Religion is only the excuse. The lust for power is what
drives some to manipulate the masses. And false prides and blood vengeance fuel the hatred.
