Well, the logical argument is that man made them up to explain the world around him, such as the early Greeks, Romans and Egyptians, all of whom had gods to things like love, the sun and war. Of the modern religions, Christianity was of course a branch of Ludaism, which was a branch of Islam. As for the other main religions of today, most of them share heavy ties with others. Religions all take something from other religions

We have a good idea about how most religions were created. The Judaic religion seems to have been born out of the various mythologies common in the day. This is evidenced by the similarities in their stories. Christianity also borrowed from the various mythologies of its day, but was mainly based on Judaism. Islam was based on Christianity and Judaism with a few local superstitions thrown in. And there is evidence for how other religions started.

God created us with a natural longing for him. That's why this section of Y!A is so popular. He designed us to seek him.
Every society throughout the history of humankind has shared a belief in a being or beings greater than themselves -- even the most isolated societies on tiny islands or distant mountains. It's part of our nature. Our hearts were made to reach out to God. While some people feel that longing and respond to it more than others, it's there. It's in us.
The theory of atheism only came about in the last century or so. While I am not an atheist, I have to acknowledge that these are the people who search energetically for Truth. I believe God honors their honest seeking, and I am grateful when they make me stop and think more deeply about my faith.
But atheism still is sort of a little fluke in the history of mankind.

Common sense tells me that the tone of skin for this world
is brown. When one gets in the sun of this world, one turns
brown. Did most of us come from other worlds? Maybe even other dimensions?
Just look at all the beliefs we have on our world. If Creation is multi-dimensional, and I believe it is, and there are countless worlds out there. Couldn't many of those beliefs, (the story-telling
fashion of teaching of the old days aside), be based on fact, according to the realities of those other worlds? As far as how
and when they came into being, according to the nature
of things?

According to Feuerbach's theories, people worshipped what gave them life: The sun, the river, the earth, and so on. Later these concepts were given names and removed from their origins, often as a control method.

Primitive people being confused by their surroundings.... having developed a mind that looks beyond what something is and tries to determine how it came to be.
Unfortunately that line of thinking was still in its beta-testing phase at the time.... and was limited by lack of sufficient reasoning capability.... Some of us have since corrected those errors of the past and given up on superstition.... and then again there are still hoardes of people who haven't.

The first sign a species is becoming sentient is when they have evolved to the point where they can abstract enough to invent a god. The first time a species achieves sentient maturity is when the get rid of their gods.
