There actually is a barkless breed of dog but I can't remember the name of the breed. Check the AKC website. I do know that it is kind of rare and expensive. Besides that, all dogs bark! Some breeds tend to bark more than others though. I can tell you what to avoid! German Sheperds, Shelties, Poodles, and Dobermans barks alot. Almost all toy breeds are very "yappy". I think you just really have to work with your dog from a young age not to bark when it's not supposed to. There is a ton of material on the internet and in books on teaching dogs not to bark. They also sell collars that either emit a small shock or a high pitch noise to discourage barking. I haven't tried them though. You can also surgically have a dog de-barked but I don't know much about the surgery like the cost or risks. Just remember, when a dog barks, it's trying to tell us something or another dog or person! That can be a good thing. They have saved many people from intruders! However, my Sheltie drives me nuts with her constant barking at squirrels and our cats! They are a "barky" breed though. Oh, that breed is called a BASENJI. I knew I'd remember it. Also, have you considered a cat? They don't bark and the neighbors won't be complaining and calling the cops. GOOD LUCK.

Sure, there are breeds that normally don't bark, or bark less than other breeds, but it depends much more on the dog's own presonality and training.
I have had 2 beagles, a breed known for EXCESSIVE noise, barking and howling. My first beagle NEVER barked. Actually, the only noises she would ever make were little yelp if her paw got stepped on or she otherwise hurt, or just a little squeaky noise if she wants to go out.
The beagle we have now, will only bark if she needs to go out, or wants to come in (and even then she'll "knock" on the door first with her paw!) or to let me know when someone's coming up to the house if my husband's not home and she doesn't know the person.
Aside from that the only noises out of her are the growly-barky noises when she plays really hard, and sometimes whining or crying when she's crated, but she's still only 6 months old.
Just to let you know that any breed of dog can be quiet, you just have to choose the right one and train properly.

The worst offenders for barking would probably be any of the terrier or toy breeds. Dogs can be trained not to bark except to alert you to something, you just have to consistently work at it.
Basenjis don't bark, but their howl is way worse than any other dog's bark. The only breed as a whole that I know of that barks very little is greyhounds. I had my 3 for a couple of months before I heard one of them bark and they never bark at people.

I spent a lot of time searching for an apartment dog, one especially important part being the barking issue and I came across Mi-ki's .. quite expensive but definetly worth the investment! They rarely bark, don't bite, have hair instead of fur so if you have allergy problems, you don't have to worry and they can be trained to use a litter box like a cat.
On the other hand, I would recommend this website that has an interactive questionaire that can help you select the best companion!

the basenji from the congo a hunting dog does not bark however it makes a yodelling when hunting. not the ideal pet as it is an escape artist and not obedient this apart they are charming little fellas.
if you are looking for a dod which does not bark a lot i have a deerhound who only barks at hegehogs-nothing else not ideal if you are house proud or have little room and dont like exercise.
greyhounds tend to be quiet couch potatoes as are some of the retreivers and labs. Dont get terriers or guarding breeds.

Some dogs don't make a sound, ever, others are very vocal. It really depends on the dog itself, though, not the breed (though smaller dogs do tend to be a little yappy...). However, Basenjis cannot bark...they just kind of grunt/howl/scream. It's worse than barking, if you ask me.

Sighthounds are generally pretty quiet, my Whippets only bark if there is really something to bark at.
A word about Basenjis, since that is what most people will say, they make this loud, terrible sounding moan. Much worse than most barks, IMO.

Believe it or not I have a book that says Labradors and Retrievers seldom bark, no idea who wrote it but they are wrong, my golden retriever loves to woof and bark for England and my niece has a Labrador who's exactly the same, I have no idea which dogs seldom bark, for me barking is part of your dogs character and nothing wrong with it.

Boston terrier is a non barking dog.... that is small and clean and very smart.
they will hardly ever bark...unless they feel the need to warn you...they are very alert and will guard your home.
ok maybe so WALKINGLADY but not this breed...the AKC nicknamed them "the barkless dog" so before you go off acting like you know so much and tellin people about your gay mutt non breed.....do a little research. :) by the way ...they are mostly bulldog.
