i took mine, and they worked. They are designed to make you feel better, not worse! Give them a try, but dont expect them to kick in for two to three weeks,as it takes a while, so dont stop taking them because you think the're not working, just give it time. You cant get addicted to anti depressants, nor was i a zombie!!.They help you function on a normal level, not make you feel as if your off your head. I had prozac, by the way,and eventaully,i came off them. You shouldnt just stop taking anti depressants all of a sudden.I think some people have the totally wrong idea about anti depression drugs. They dont work for everybody, but it wont hurt to try!

I have suffered with depresson for many years and been on basically the alphabet of antidepresants to find one that suited. Since then I have been diagnosed with having a chemical imbalance not so far from bi-polar. I now have to take ones that are a slow release seratonin to up the levels. I couldn't get by without mine and it takes nearly 3 months for them to totally kick in. If your doc was doing their job prop then you should be getting counselling hand in hand with the tablets. You cannot get addicted to them, although if on a high dose most docs like you to wean off them by lowering the dose. It took me a long time to take my tabs in the first place because so many people have a negative attitude to depression and anti-depressants. I say take them for a good 3 months and seek counselling too. If the ones prescribed make you feel worse then they may not be the right one, there are so many these days. As a short term fix for emotional depression they will either work for you or not. You won't know till you try..... Hope this helps and its not just a load of waffle....I do tend to go on a bit!!!!! lol hope you feel better soon xxx Yes I have been on them and for me they didn't work I have now settled on 20mg escitalopram which is similar to what you have been given. There is a very informative site you could look at www.medicinenet.com good luck. Let us know how you get on I shall look out for you. xxxxx

If your doc has given them to you there must be a good reason. Ask the chemist about the tabs and see what he has to say. Are they addictive etc if not sure don't take them until you have got more info. Some tabs make you worse before you start to feel better so you need to know all these things.
Never just blindly take any medication until you know all the affects they may have. Try asking NHS Direct for some information

I was given prozac to take from a doctor who had only visited once( was taken very ill with a chest infection, my own doctor wasnt available- ended up talking about being very short tempered and tired all the time..), he didnt know anything about me or my family. He never asked informative questions as to why I was feeling so bad. I ended up on them for 9 months- I really didnt feel the benefits and said it to my regular doctor who was outraged by him.
I gained alot of weight with them, didnt feel any better and started taking more and more.

Im now off them thanx to my own doctor. He really believed I was not depressed and was wrongly diagnosed. The problem with antidepressants is that they dont fix the problem only become a crutch for people who really cant deal with their issues. You need to sort what the main cause is and not turn to tablets unless you really really have to. Try talking to a friend, a councellor or even write a letter to yourself as to whats going on.

Sorting your head out without tablets is the only way your going to feel better.

Good Luck

If your doc prescribed them give them a try. If you feel worse go straight back to docs. I started taking them didn't feel as if they were helping at first but then after about two weeks felt some improvement, have been taking for three months now. I feel alot better and am starting to enjoy life again. My doc says i may need to keep taking them for up to 12 month then he will gradually reduce the dose. Make sure you have a good doctor who you can talk to. Good luck.

The worse thing about antidepressants are the withdrawal symptoms when you try to come off them.

I have just had the worse 3 months of my life because the drug company just decided to discontinue making them.

I was offered an alternative but decided against them as some day i will have to go through that again to get off the new ones.

never again !

I personally would not take them, my mum refused her tablets and the doctor actually sorted out a therapist for her, im sure she didnt pay for it, and she did really well and is fine now. Ask your doctor about counselling instead. They seem to hand antidepressants out like sweets a lately.

Seeing that your doctor gave them to you, he must think they will help, obviously you were feeling really low otherwise you would not have even accepted them. Try them, I understand that they will take two to three weeks before you start to benefit from them. If you do not feel any difference by that time, go back to him, you may require the dose to be increased. Do persevere, when you start to feel better you will be so much happier and in time will be back to your old self, and he will start the process of taking you off them. I hope you feel better very soon.

I think it's an individual thing - they may be the only thing that helps someone, for someone else they may be no good at all. If you have someone (a friend or relative) ask them to keep check on your behaviour if you do take them to see if you get better or worse.
You might also think about going to see a dietitian because a lot of foods will affect you too probably without you realising it.

i think my sister was on these after the death of my father she says they were ok but you can under no circumstances drink alcohol she drank 2 glasses of wine with them and couldn't even stand up so be carefull but apart from the wine she had no bother with them.

Personally i would never take them no matter how low i felt i think as soon as you stop taking them yr back to square 1 and it starts all over again try getting out the house join a gym that lifts depression good luck anyway babes hope yr feeling better soon :)
