If you want to give something really special, consider carefully which brand you buy. Most, if not all, high street chocolate companies do not use fair trade or organic chocolate. That means that your friend's Xmas present has been produced through badly-paid labour, often in terrible conditions; it has been picked, shipped and flown around the world several times, contributing to climate change; it probably contains pesticides, GM soya, additives and preservatives that are linked to soil erosion and human cancers.

Instead, look for chocolate with the Fair Trade symbol, preferably that has been produced organically, in small batches. Many cities now have chocolate boutiques that handmake their chocolates, and health food stores will sell a range of bars, boxes, truffles and other treats where you can check the source of the ingredients and the manufacturing conditions.

Some brands to look out for: Kaoka, Vivandi, Cocoa Camino, Michel Cluizel, Divine, Dagoba... your local area will also have some, and there are many companies online who can help you out.

My office gave me a box of Godiva chocolates as part of my Wedding present before I finished work for the Wedding. They were fantastic! When we got back off honeymoon these chocolates didn't last very long at all!

Thorntons are very good too and very easy to get hold of.

Yes - I would recommend them - they are lovely! I went to a wedding earlier this year and they had tiny boxes with 2 Godiva chocs inside as an alternative to sugared almonds and it was a really nice touch! Can I be your friend too...

Who wouldn't be delighted, they are absolutely the best chocolates to give (and receive!). They look and taste fantastic and the chocolate is amazing quality. The fillings are out of this world. Rather than choose a box off the shelf, why don't you choose each chocolate yourself and get it put in a box - it's much more personal and makes them even more special. I had Leonidas at my wedding and they are fab too - they even do sugar free ones xxx

Yum!!
Godiva chocolates are wonderful!!! They have great variety boxes. And sometimes they throw in a little something extra with a box, like a scarf or a little jewelry pouch.
