The U.S. didn't get involved right away. World War II started in late 1939 when Hitler invaded Poland. President Franklin D. Roosevelt realized we would probably need to intervene at that point, but no formal declaration of war was issued because our military simply was not ready -- not enough equipment, supplies, or trained personnel at that time. So from 1939 to 1941 our military "geared up" for possible involvement in the war against Hitler. It wasn't until the Japanese attacked the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard in Honolulu on December 7, 1941 that a formal declaration of war was issued. Once we joined the fight, we united with other European nations to defend the countries Hitler hadn't taken over and to liberate the countries Hitler HAD taken over. But that's only half the story. The U.S. also fought against Japan in the Pacific, doing pretty much the same thing there as we were doing against Hitler in Europe. It took almost four years, but when we were done Hitler was dead, the Nazi forces had been decimated, and the Japanese surrendered after we used atomic weapons on two of their largest cities.

It was the Arsenal of freedom.
The US produced massive amounts of war materials and food. Convoys full of these goods were sent to all the alliance, and that was the only thing that kept them going.
Without US supplies, both UK and USSR would have been toast.
