I'd rather have a thick blank notebook and a few pencils and I could write my own.

I am an avid reader also, would I wish for my Bible, yes.
You state that you have tried to read the Bible cover to cover. Over the last eight years I have read the Bible cover to cover. January 1 I start on Genesis and December 31 I end with Revelation.
Is some of it boring oh yes - can we say Ezekiel. But several years into consist ant reading of the Bible it was like looking into the Matix and actually seeing through it and understanding. How things tie together and it is quite fascinating.
Your Bible has, murder, adultery, poetry, love, family drama, war and miracles.
The best way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time. Divide that Bible up by the year and just read that schedule. There are days when I do not think I will get through the passage, other days I don't want to put the book down. The other recommendation is the Life Application Bible or the Living Message which a better read than the King James Version.
2007 is coming - it is a great goal for the new year. God Bless

I would definitely choose the Bible. If i were stuck indefinitely on a desert island I would want something that would comfort me and give me hope. I find the Bible a source of comfort when I'm down - lots of people went through hardships in the Bible but God brought them through it. The Bible would remind me of God's promise to bring me through whatever I'm going through if I just keep the faith!
No - i haven't read the Bible from cover to cover much as I'd like to...but i do pick up my Bible now and then and then and I always find something that inspires me. I don't read the Bible in any particular order though I try to complete each book that I start to read.
I particularly like the teachings of Jesus - he was a non - conformist and a bit of a rebel who stood up for what he believed in - a very interesting character. I'd love to have met him back in the day.

It's not a novel to start from cover to cover. Many Catholics suggest to read the Gospel of John first, then Genesis then Revelation. Then read the other books. And to read it once through gets you no where. You need to study it and talk to other Christians, join a bible study group to get the full meaning from it. Read the Catechism of the Catholic Church along with it because that book gives the meaning of the verses and chapters. It's a hard book to fully comprehend on its own. There's tons of info in it. And the Old Testament pretells the New New Testament and the New Testament fulfills the Old Testament. I recently did a study of the Book of Judges and it took us 5 weeks to go through it. And to learn history from those days is very important as well.
Try again and never give up! Good luck and blessings to you!

If you like history, science and literature, you should like reading the Bible because it contains all of these.
If you found the Bible boring, try reading the New Testament.
Even in the OT, I don't see how you could find Psalms, Proverbs, Job, Isaiah, Ezekiel, Jonah boring.
Try it again, this time ask God to make it come alive for you.

I would read the bible. TD Jakes has created the Women Thou Art Loosed Editon. It is awesome. It has the regular New King James text plus extra information for women. It list every women that is in the Bible. It also have gospel pearls (Footnotes) and words of encouragement for any trial or test that christians go through.

Yep, I'd pick the Bible. I too love to read and would miss other books, but to only have one, it would be the Bible. Not only do I believe it's the living Word of God, it's filled with all sorts of interesting stories and its depth is unfathomable so that you could read the same passage over and over again and still find stuff you missed in earlier readings.

I would take the bible there are many storys in it. history is made up of many chapters. reading it cover to cover is hard work although I have done it at least twice. but the book of ester is good and Ruth. all have deeper meaning if you serch like the paribles of Jesus. definatly one to read again and again not necceseraly numbers and laviticuse though. psalms the gosples and those named after people , Jona Job Ruth ester and so on may be easier

yes. it would be the bible... but i understand your problem. the bible is a love story written to God's believers, who are led by the holy spirit as they read.. The bible will not have much meaning to the "natural man." There are meanings there, but you cannot "see" them. Only when you are led by the holy spirit will you see the spirtual meanings and be inspired by the content, and learn from it. It is like reading on a different wavelength.
