In China, you never give it to an older person as a gift. It mean time is "ticking" and they could be dead soon.

Aside from the Chinese ruling on giving one to an older person, there could be an inuendo that the person is always late to any engagements or social events and needs a good clock in the house. Unless the person specifically mentioned wanting one, I think most homes have more clocks in the house than are necessary. Almost all major appliances come with a built in clock.

You don't have to give money.... Pick a gift.... The average gift is around 50$ I got married last july and we got anything from 20$ to 700$ the majority of gifts that were money were 50$ but just give what you can and no one will care. It is just the excitement of the day. Your Boyfriend is already doing a BIG thing by being the best man and in reality the groom should be giving him a gift and may give him a gift. but anything from 40-50$ is appropriate. But if you can't do that then what ever you can give is fine.

To the Chinese "giving/sending clock" means be at the person's deathbed waiting for him to die.
