My Grandmother broke her hip and was in a rhabilitation centre. We witnessed a nurse being very abrupt and rough with her and she complained to us on many occasions that she was 'nasty'. We did not want to say anything at the time, incase she took it out on my Grandmother, but now feel we should make a complaint. Any ideas?

Put your complaint in writing to the ward manager with as much detail as possible (dates, times, names and details of the complaint). Most hospitals (NHS in UK) have a timescale in which they need to acknowledge, investigate and reply to such complaints.

It is important to highlight these issues as soon as possible.

Go to the matron in charge or you could go to the nursing council in your area or country and mention the name of the patient, the staff member and the date and times that these incidences occurred. I don't tolerate anyone being rude or rough with any of my patients, why should a member of the patients family or the public for that matter. Get all your facts written down before you complain, this will strengthen your case.

The Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS) aims to:

Advise and support patients, their families and carers
Provide information on NHS services
Listen to your concerns, suggestions and queries
Help sort out problems quickly on your behalf
Why contact PALS?

We know people sometimes don't raise their concerns because they don't want to make a formal complaint, or feel that they don't want to add burden to already busy staff. However, we want to know when our services are not working well, so that we can continue to improve them.

The rehabilitation centre will be part of a trust and all trusts have a PALS officer - Good Luck
Nurses are supposed to care

I am a nurse and I think if you and your family feel that your grandmother was mistreated you deserve an explanation. I suggest you request to speak with the patient representative. This is a person on the hospital staff whose responsibility it is to resolve these kind of issues.

ask to see the director of nursing and administrator and facility ombudsman( patient advocate) to voice your complaints if you feel the need to go further you may file a complaint with the state hotline in which you live regarding patient abuse and they will come in to investigate that number should be posted in the facility

any facility that is reputable will not allow any one to" take it out "on her and risk being sued for abuse
i'm sorry you had this experience
you could also request this nurse not care for your grandmother

Hi! I am sorry for what you had to experience.I would call the state board of health investigators. They will come unannounced and the facility will be caught off guard without time to clean the mess up they have made.If you complain to the individuals in charge at the facility things might get worse when you leave.

They have a procedure for complaints, bring it to the hospital management, after doing that go to your local paper, not national.
Try to get them intrested even writing or email to readers letters.
Get in touch with your MP,he will have a surgery that he talks to his constituants problems about every months, find out when.
Keep at it dont let it rest and good luck to you and gran

if its NHS then talk to ward manager.

Or the independent PALS (patient advisory and liaison service) they are in every Hospital and are independent and do a fantastic job.

If its a Care Home I would go straight to the council, as most of them are privately run and it would just be covered up, and you obviously don't want this abuse happening to others.

Hope this helps

if your gran is still in there then the procedure would be first to complain to the manager. if you get no joy then report it to the local health authority who will take you through the correct procedure.
if however your gran is not in there now you may have trouble proving your complaint.
i would go th the health authority in your area and see what they suggest
