If you were still working in the school, it might be best to approach him slowly, as a rapid approach does carry some added risk of rejection. However, under the circumstances, a subtle approach simply isn't an option. Do it or don't do it.
Does he know you by name? If you were to call him, how difficult would it be for him to know who you are?
Here's an idea, if you want to be just a little on the sneaky side. Call him up on the weekend, and ask if he has a few minutes to meet with you. A coffee shop or pancake house might be a good place to arrange a meeting.
If he asks for a reason, tell him you may have lost something in his classroom, perhaps a piece of jewelry, and you're wondering if he may have found it.
At this point, he has two choices. He can assure you that he hasn't seen it, or he can agree that it would be a good idea for the two of you to get together to discuss the matter.

Why not right? It can't hurt. If he is not interested in you that way you can always say that the reason why you called was to get to know eachother better first. You will never know unless you do something. You don't want to be wondering what if for the rest of your life. Do It! And Good Luck

If he's a single and available, try it. If you felt some sparks, chances are he did too. But since you no longer work there, things can develop now. So try it. If it doesn't work, then at least you'll know and will be able to move on.
