I was also taught that everybody wears a crown adorned with jewels. The more magnificent a christian you are in your earthly life, the more magnificent your crown will be in your heavenly life. Seems to me that people should do and be good for goodness sake not for the sake of bejeweled headgear. I don't get the whole heaven must be wonderful and opulent when the only true reward is supposed to be spending an eternity in the living presence of your creator and forever worshiping him and singing his praises as man was created to do, not skipping around on burnished gold flaunting your new fashionable hat while you pal up with long lost friends and family members.

FIRST:
The Book of Revelation does NOT say the streets of heaven are paved with gold. It says this of a city: "New Jerusalem" (Revelation 21:21). New Jerusalem COMES DOWN FROM heaven but it is not said to BE heaven (Revelation 21:2 and 21:10). Please read your Bible carefully.
SECOND:
Stop trying to apply temporal, physical properties to eternal, spiritual things, this Never works.

Not to worry. Everyone will be decked out in top-notch Nike basketball shoes, which will be distributed at the entrance.
Seriously -- I'm sure that "paved with gold" is simply a metaphor. Our existence in heaven will be entirely spiritual, not physical, so there's no worry about slipping and falling or anything.

Dude, if God can make streets of gold, don't you think He has all the other details like the frictional coefficient of the pavement all worked out?
