same reason why a banana is yellow and why sh-t is brown.

Before the orange fruit was introduced to the English-speaking world, the colour was referred to (in Old English) as geoluhread, which translates into Modern English variously as yellow-red, yellowred, or yellored (all pronounced the same).

Orange derives from Sanskrit nāraṅgaḥ "orange tree", but another explanation tries to establish a link to a Dravidian root “fragrant”. Compare Tamil narandam [நரந்தம்] “bitter orange”, nagarukam [நாகருகம்] “sweet orange” and nari [நாரி] "fragrance". The Sanskrit or Dravidian word was borrowed into European languages through Persian nārang, Armenian nārinj, Arabic nāranj, Spanish naranja, Late Latin arangia, Italian arancia or arancio, and Old French orenge, in chronological order. The first appearance in English dates from the 14th century.

Would you call a lemon a yellow? Or a lime a green? Plus, there are soooo many different kinds of apples, you'd still have to specify. "Red Delicious Reds" and "Granny Smith Reds" and "As American as Red pie" don't appeal to me as much as apples. And with red being an adjective and all, it'd just make for some weird sentences......

Maybe because oranges were the only known orange food until they started pulling carrots out of the ground. But there are tons of red things, so in that case, the color was named before the fruit. In the oranges case, it was named before the color, and our forefathers just kept it...?
