Perhaps I should have specified all the ones were registered charities who just could not be bothered.

i am so sorry to hear that you were treated like this. it is shameful when you are trying to give something away especially a charity and to be treated with such disrespect. I would suggest that you call a local women's organization such as a battered women's shelter or domestic violence agency, they are always welcoming of donations. Since in most cases these women leave with their children and the clothing on their backs. Good luck and God bless

Sadly I've come across this too.
We tried to give books away to a local charity shop with no luck.
The big problem with furniture at the moment is that there is SO MUCH OF IT AROUND that they do not want to take it as they cannot sell it on.
I had a friend who had a big container FULL of good quality furniture and he could not even give it away - It was a very big bonfire.
There are also H & S issues, if it is over a certain age (1998) foam coverings & the like do not meet modern regs, so they cannot sell it on.
Try & put an ad in the local press.

That sounds really ridiculous when you can't even give stuff away! Have you tried the British Heart Foundation? They have shops up and down the country that sell second hand furniture and they generally collect for free within 48 hours.
Alternatively, try contacting a local charity dealing with homeless people or women's refuge. They are always looking for stuff to pass on to people getting their first home. Or sometimes local churches take such stuff for the same reason.
Or you could sell it on e-bay and make a few bob.

I don't know what kinds of charities she contacted. I would've thought they could put such things into good use, but I guess sometimes they just can't take such things or don't really have anything to do with them. I've noticed more and more though that charities seem to prefer money nowadays and not be too bothered with other kinds of help, which is a sad development.

Some charities don't take furniture because they're not allowed to due to health and safety regulations and also the fact that they know they couldn't sell it and would therefore not only be taking money away from other charities but why take something from someone if it's going to sit there rusting.
There are charities that take furniture...Salvation Army for one. Charities don't pick and choose but you have to understand that they can't give stuff away which can't be sold on.

It's the old story with all these charities - all they want is your money, and if you try to give them anything else you're not much more than a bloody nuisance. I gave up trying to give unwanted goods away a long while ago. Just put it in the street outside your front door and it'll be gone within five minutes, guaranteed!
What is your rubbish is somebody elses' Godsend - AND it's local !!!

you didn't really ask a question, did you? anyway, i know it sort of puts you off when you try to go out of your way to help people/organizations and they respond to your kindness in unexpected (rude) ways. though they had no right to be rude, try to relax and be patient...the people your wife got in touch with probably belong to the bunch that are wary of being repeatedly bombarded with telemarketing and other such schemes by people that want to make a buck.
