That's just something preachers made up to scare their congregations. I'm pretty sure that the movies picked up because it looked cool and played to popular culture.

Hollywood.
What do hardline older Christians associate with Hell? Rock music, long hair, tattoos and piercings. The "Rock" (or goth, punk, etc etc etc ) image.
Now take the viewpoint of a Hollywood screenwriter. How do you emphasis that this is Hell without being too dreary/scary? You make a big play of all the fun modern sins. Like rock music, long hair, tattoos and piercings.
And if you're not too keen on the Hollywood idea: consider this. While I was once dressed all in black, a woman called me the Devil, a sinner, evil. (She was a bit odd in the head...) Now, if everyone that wears black, has piercings, is into Rock music goes to Hell.... Well, it's one giant Bauhaus gig (supported by every punk/goth/emo band in the world)!

That's Hollywood for you. People won't find it so "glamorous" or "party-time" when they're cast into the lake of fire in torment.
Take the band AC/DC for one. Their song entitled "Highway to Hell". It glamorizes hell. Consider the lyrics to the song: "Goin' down, party time, my friends are gonna be there too, I'm on the hiiiighway to hell! ..Hey Satan, Look at me, I'm on my way to the promised land!"
