Because it meant that the church was in control and without question. It negated the personal study of tthe bible for the common person and so they would never see the truth behind the lies.
It must have been important because the first ones such as William Tyndale were burned alive for attempting to translate the word into plain english!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The translating of the word into native tongues would let people see the falsehood of the teachings of the Church of Rome ( hence the Protestant Reforms ) , and would take away the need for all the priests to hold positions as go-betweens ,giving people back personal relationships with god.

Ah, good old Protestants blaming the Catholic church for everything. If you think about it, no one could read anything back then, except for those in th curch and the only reason they could read was because they had to read the Bible. the Bible was in Latin because it had been translated from Greek and Cyrillic during Roman times, when they spoke Latin regularly. It was just rich people, they could maybe have bought a Bible, but that doesn't mean they could have read it. Because only the monks and nuns knew how to read, they also were the only ones who knew how to write. Thus they were only in Latin because who was going to translate it into Romance language? (Granted all of this became a moot point when people actually started going to universities which, by the way, were originally started to train priests.)

Some did have to do with power. They were trying to make sure people mad eit to heaven, much like the Christians in the US are trying to force their morality on all those who don't want it. Sounds familiar? The Catholic church did see a loss of power because of general education. It became much more a thing of luxury rather than a thing of necessity.

Well, if you're referring to the dark ages, the reason vary.

First, paper was expensive. They didn't have fax machines and Internet back then. And they didn't have public schools like we do now. Only the wealthy nobles received any formal education. So, it was up to the preachers to convey the word of God to the masses.

As for why was it in Latin? Well, a lot of the Bible was written in Latin in the first place. Or was it first translated to Latin? I'm not sure about that one....
Either way, Latin was the language of the "truly educated ". The scholars and professors of the time all knew Latin. And since the word of God was considered a very powerful work at the time....well, you see where I"m going.

Christianity IS meant for all people. Don't confuse the actions of so-called Christians with the real message about Christ. Anyone can claim to be a believer, but that doesn't mean that they are. These people in the church hierarchy in the Middle Ages who tried to keep the Word of God out of the hands of common folk were not true Christians in any sense of the word. Jesus said for His disciples--all of us--to take His Gospel to all the world, not hoard it among ourselves. As for the Bible being only in Latin during the Middle Ages, that was more of the same--trying to keep people from finding out what the Word of God says in their own language--these were not the actions of true Christians. Check out the link below about William Tyndale, who was martyred for his faith.

Mustafa rOcKs, with all due respect, where is the evidence that the Bible was corrupted? People say this all the time but never offer any evidence. Quite to the contrary, the Dead Sea Scrolls show the amazing consistency of Biblical translation over the centuries, and with the number of ancient documents available for comparison, the Biblical texts we use today are being corroborated, not refuted. Please read the link below about the Dead Sea Scrolls.

So that bible could be preverted and changed. In the process, the idea that Jesus was the son of God and died on the cross for our sins. This concept was introduced so that now people of christian faith could follow their vain dirty desires and then say that our sins are paid for. Hence God felt the need that the final testament needs to be sent down with the final messanger, and this time He himself would guard His word. Hence the Quran was revealed to correct all the false allegation which christians put against God like Him beggeting a son. Beggeting is an animal act, and God only creats, not beggetes as said by christians that Jesus (pbuh) was the only begotten son of god.

God says in the Quran " Say that He is Allah, the one and only, Allah the absolute and eternal, niether does He begett, nor is He begotten, and there is nothing unto like him"

Because the Catholic Church decided that the common folk were too stupid to understand the bible without them (the Catholic Church) telling everyone what each part of the Scriptures meant.

In the Old Testament, the word was not meant for all people. It was meant as a tool to keep a "people" pure and upright.

The new testment was a calling unto all people unto a new gospel so as to find repentance and be saved.

Not sure about the Latin. it was a matter of translation for men... But, in the gospels, it was meant to be published in all languages throughout the world.

Mark 13:10
And the gospel must first be published among all nations.

The church did not want the people to think for themselves. They wanted complete control over the people. It was not a religious issue, but a power play.

It is He Who sent down to thee (step by step), in truth, the Book, confirming what went before it; and He sent down the Law (of Moses) and the Gospel (of Jesus) before this, as a guide to mankind, and He sent down the criterion (of judgment between right and wrong).
