after european settlement of america, when did the states begin and why?

does anyone know why the states came into being. i know the spanish the french and the english were on the continent and this would explain some borders but who decided that idiana was a seperate area to say, georgia?

I think the borders were more a part of the monarchy's decision to allow for different parties to control different areas as they gradually made their way on to the continent
