To add to emagana's comment, which is SPOT on - The thyroid gland can be OVERACTIVE or underactive. It happens sometimes and is no biggie, but sometimes it is serious. Depending on wether it is Hyper active or underactive, the gland's activities can cause moodiness, depression, weight gain, drastic weight loss, diabetes, and all sorts of things. Once it is diagnosed, a chemical will be given to counter-balance the effects, and in most cases it works very well.

The gland is hyper or under active in degrees, if I can put it that way. So it can be a little or a lot hyper or under active, and that will determine the medication as well as the general treatment. It can lead to fatigue and at that point it's important to conserve energy whilst it regulates itself.

There are times when it needs to be removed, and it can then cause a HUGE weight gain. People do not know that through a nutritionalist, the thyroid gland can be assisted in its recuperation, but it really does work. I have a friend who put on about 100 excess kilos, and only 30 years later did she find out that a nutritionalist could help her. She has now lost the weight and is feeling great.

There is always hope with the Thyroid. Mine has been underactive before and I was CONSTANTLY tired. Thanks to the right meds and excercise & nutrition, I'm okay now. Encourage her and read up on it on the net. Google it, and you will get LOADS of info.

It is some problem with her thyroid gland. This gland releases a substance that helps in metabolism or the rate of sugar use in the muscles. I can see why the Doctor doesn't want her to do sports.

Thyroid gland hormone. Your thyroid gland produces hormones that control your metabolism. An overactive thyroid causes a number of symptoms. Her doctor probably doesn't want her to get into sports because it would only worsen her symptoms.
