i agreed with the opinion that how much are u willing to pay for the software. but one thing you should consider is how fast it runs and how quick it updates new def. for new virus, and how strong it tackles with new forms of virus. itis very simple because in everyday surfing internet, ont only you have to face with cunrrent virus (already in their data) but you have also face with new forms of unknown virus, and at that time, you'll need your software can sort it out and disinfect it. for some anti-virus software i did use, i have some ideas:
mcafee 2007: excellent with protecting spyware and virus, integrate firewall, anti-virus, and anti-spyware in one. i really appreciate this software except one thing i cant recomend is it consumes too much of memory and causes ur computer slow down a lot.
karspersky 6: the anti-virus function is perfect, u can say it is the best of all, but firewall and anti-spyware are not a good one. and one thing is the price is too expensive compared to bitdefender. the last thing is it also comsumes memory and cause slow down a little bit ur computer
bitdenfer 10: perfect on anti-virus, quickly update, cheap price
norton 2007: the anti-virus is not good as those above, but one positive point for this version is is much lighter than mcafee, consumes less memory than mcafee and karspersky. and it is very good at firewall as well.

Pretty much it depends on how much you're willing to pay.
If you're going for total online protection (including firewall), Norton Internet Security or Zone Alarm Security Suite will do the job (Cost ~$70 + $30/yr.)
For professional Anti-virus support, Norton Anti-virus, McAfee or PC-Cillin will do the job (Cost: ~$40 + $20-30/yr.)
For Basic (as in FREE) anti-virus support, Avast will do the job (Free for personal use). I can't recommend AVG due to personal problems with their software.
Pretty much the big question is "How much are you willing to pay for support?" & "How involved do I want to be in the security of my computer?"
The more you're willing to pay, the less you'll have to do... & vice versa. Pretty much pick a product that works well for your needs.

McAfee's the oldest, Nortons has the most corporate business, Kapersky is very well respected, Computer Associates/ZoneAlarm AV is pretty darned fast, and AVG is FREE! Depends on what you qualify as "best."
For me, it's all about speed, so it's CA/ZoneAlarm - particularly, ZoneAlarm Security Suite - the total package, without eating all my resources.
