You can try charcoal or pencil but be sure to do so lightly, and fix the image with a light spray of fixature so the black sootiness doesn't contaminate the arcylic paint. Optionally, you can "draw" with a wash of brown, red, or blue acrylic and not then worry about contamination or bleed thru.

Charcoal will bleed through your acrylics, but it helps if you start with a wash just to give yourself enough information before you lay down the heavy coats. Once you start to add paint to your surface in thicker layers, the charcoal basically disappears. I used to try to avoid that by using soft led pencils, and that is OK except for the fact that they are tougher to use on a textured surface. It also turned out not to be as fun! I will keep an eye on this question because I'm sure someone will share some interesting concept that I will try to use myself!

I just use an ordinary pencil if it is a light background. If I need something heavier a charcoal pencil is better. Just use a light touch and the acrylics should cover it. I dont bother sealing it etc...just paint away. If there are any pencil lines left I just erase them with an eraser.

You can! but with what material?you can do mono color painting with acrylic paints.and even you do with charcoal, but you need to do a varnish coating, or similar to that.and u can do any thing on canvas, but it needs a varnish coating or similar to that.so that your paint will not go off.

Sure charcoal works but if you are going to use yellow paint I wouldn't use it. Sometimes I do my sketch with colored pastels so I don't have any color "bleedthrough"

<>From what I've read. it seems that one thing that works well are "watercolor pencils" which are colored pencils that, when water is added, act just like watercolor paint. I have seen them in art supply stores and places that have a fair amount of craft and drawing stuff.

You can use pencil- just use a harder lead so its not so "smeary". I use watered down paint to sketch also-in tans or soft grays or such
