The first answer is really good, but you might also want to figure out what it is that frightens you. It's probably something you're making up (like, "It's brain cancer and I'm going to die!!!!") and if you recognize that's what's scaring you, you can remind yourself that that's really not what's going on, and is no reason to be scared.

Are you nuts? Why would you be afraid of going to the doctor? You go to the office. You stand in line to see the receptionist. She/he asks you for your name, maybe your insurance card, and maybe your copay. You might be asked to fill out a questionairre. Your name gets called and you follow some flunky to your exam room. On the way they weigh and measure you. In the exam room the flunky will take your temperature and blood pressure and ask you a couple of questions (why are you here? what are you allergic to?). Then you will sit alone in the exam room for a terribly long time until the doctor finally comes in. They will say hi and introduce themself and ask why you are there. You tell them. They look in your eyes, ears, nose and throat with a little light. They might listen to your chest with a stethoscope. They will tell you what they think and you're done.

Nothing to be afraid of. Just remember to wear clean underwear so you're not embarrassed when they do the rectal exam.

Focus on the problem that is taking you to a doctor.

Do you want to be more comfortable?

You may be partly affected by disorientation due to your ears being infected, but most likely it's a fear of the unknown.

I had surgery in a very private and personal part of my body a few years ago, and was so glad just to be able to be more comfortable. The fear went away totally.

Oh you have nothing to worry about if it's just an ear infection. They will just say "Hi, how's it going?" and you just say your ear hurts and they'll just look in it and say "Wow it's really swollen and red in there! I will write you a prescription to fix that right up." and then you will say "Alright, thanks!" and you will pay and leave. Just think about when you are walking out of there thinking, that wasn't so hard at all. Because in your head you know it will be easy, for some reason you are just tricking yourself into being scared. Tell yourself how easy it really will be and you will be fine. Doctors are nice and they help you.

Oh, and don't forget to breathe, if you catch yourself holding your breath, you need to stop doing that and take a deep breath and then continue to breath through your nose.

just try to relax. i have the exact same problem...people have referred to it as white coat syndrome or something like that. any doctor i go to, i freak out- even to the point where my blood pressure gets as high as a 60 year old man who has never taken care of himself. it even happens when i go to the eye doctor. i would just start by telling them that you're a little nervous and see where it goes from there. being completely honest with how you're feeling will probably help them treat you better. and don't be afraid to ask them any questions you have...that's what they're there for; that's what you're paying them for.

Write down the questions you have for the doctors, that will help to start a line of communication. Relax, every thing will be OK, they will ask the other questions, you just answer truthfully.

let the docs know that you get nervous sometimes and ask them to expalin what they are going to do to you. also try and relax and understand the ocncequences of not going, things like saying hi or tlaking about the weather may also help you
