first of all don't listen to these people telling you to upgrade to xp. That's great if you have a modern computer, but my guess is that's not what we are talking about here. Any computer that runs less than 700 megahertz is going to crawl with xp on it.

download ccleaner at http://www.ccleaner.com this program will let you safely delete things you don't need and leave stuff you do.

then get rid of unneeded programs running in the background. click on start then run, type in msconfig and hit enter. in the app that pops up, click on the start up tab. uncheck programs you don't need. reboot, that should speed things up and make things more stable. with windows 98, less is better.

It is advisable to upgrade your PC to Windows XP and add in more RAM. If you insist on using windows 98 then try the following.

Firstly perform disk clean up for C: driver from Accessories>system tool>disk clean up. Make sure you check in all the boxes on the screen where it shows you files to delete. (FYI it is safe to delete them this way).

Secondly run scan disk and make sure you have checked in the boxes where it says 1) Automatically fix error and 2) Thorough Scan

Last but not the least run disk defragment also available under Accessories>system tools

After carrying out the above your computer should be running faster than before, however, you are advised to perform the above at least once a month.

Tip: you may also remove some of the unused windows components under Control panel>Add/Remove program. This will help to free up some more space.

GOOD LUCK!

You might have spyware. I would scan with Spybot Seach & Destory and Microsoft's Defender. Update both in the options of the program before you scan.

As for files you can remove there are 10,000 differnt ones that you shouldn't delete. So naming them all is to much work. Add and Remove Programs is the way to remove stuff.

if the suggesion given by all the above 4 does not work, then take a backup of your important files and burn it in CD.

then boot your system with a floppy/cd
run fdisk and remove the partition
create new partition
format all the partition
reinstall win 98 and other programs which u want to use.

if the above also dont work, you dont have any other option except to keep your system on railway track
