The average is six weeks for a US citizen to get a passport... so says the Passport Services Office. To obtain a passport for the first time, you need to go in person to a "passport acceptance facility". You can get one faster if you live near one of the 13 regional passport agencies. You can always get it within 24 hours provided that you pay an extra cost for quick processing. Otherwise I guess it could take up to 3 to 14 days depending on the country
