I've never seen the Devil.
Have you?
And, I'm betting nobody else really has.
Outside the Mental Sanatorium, that is.
So, the question is, actually, just academic.

A person cannot give the devil their soul. The devil and any person that doesn't accept Jesus as Lord and Saviour will goe to hell. In the book of Revelation it says that the devil will be thrown into the lake of fire, just like an unbeliever.
Rev 20:10
(10) And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night forever and ever.
Satan has nothing. All things belong to God. Hell is just God's garbage can.

My guess is that they sell it for the usual stuff like money,popularity,even love but in the end they realize they got nothing and they want their souls back but they can't have them,so it is like they give their souls for nothing.
I can't be sure but that happens in the movies all the time.

Temporal stuff. For example, wealth, glory in the eyes of other people, power. It depends on what the person most wants, so much so that he or she is willing to lose eternal life in order to fulfill some desire in this earthly life.
