One of the five pillars of EU membership is free movement of goods and people thoughout the member states.
We are not an island, as such and have not been since Thatcher signed us up for EU membership. We are, for want of a better term, a part of the United States of Europe. This means that you can go and work in Spain, Germany, etc. If you want to (The standard of living + wages is definately better in some of the countries).
Wouldn't such a new law, allowing us to select who we want to apply EU law to be in breach of our own membership agreement?
It is quite simple. If we do not want Romanians to work in UK, fight their application for EU membership. Once they are EU members, it becomes an issue for the EU, not local states, as to who has the right to work where.
God, we have only been Europeans for 30 years now, you would think that most people would have read the bold print by now.

No as a British person I am delighted they are doing it and I wish they'd done this ages ago.
I am SICK of spongers coming here to get what they can from this coutnry when its practically on its knees and there are British people living in poverty and having to do shitty low paid work because there are not enough good jobs around.
I am sick of immigrants being given council houses when there are not enough affordable houses to go around and British families are living in homeless shelters and B&Bs.
We do NOT want or need these people. They should stay where they are or go find another country to leech off. We've had enough.
The only ones who support these immigrants are those who have good jobs and plenty of money and know nothing about the misery some of their fellow Brits are living in.
The only "disappointmet" I feel is that our Government in the UK seem to care more about flooding this country with foreigners than it does about looking after its own people.

The UK is so full of immigrants that the country is suffering, there is only so much room in this country, and we can't keep taking people in more and more, for one where are they gonna live? The housing and benefits systems cannot cope, and the people that truly need that help don't get it anymore, British people cannot get the help they need as they government is too busy paying for everyone else. Sorry it just makes me angry as I see British people suffering because we have just let too many people in to the country and they are bleeding us dry. I have no problem with people who want to work and contribute to the country, I just have a problem with people that come here for an easy life and free housing etc. Also, there was a newspaper article yesterday talking about an memo that was leaked showing that crime will rise even higher than it is now if we continue to let people flood in to Britain. It is gonna be a totally horrible place to live soon.

There are reasons for this and exceptions, the new law will determine the suitablity of new applicants based on theri backgrounds, their qualifications and the need in Britain for skilled people.
This will stop Romanians coming to live and work in the UK, but it will make the process more transparant and will ultimately mean that less people come to the UK.

Yes, this is sheer discrimination. Why should Bulgarians and Romanians pay for somebody else's mistakes? Obviously, people in the UK are more comfortable with illegal than with legal immigrants.

The issue is discrimination. Why should the Polish and other eastern Europeans be allowed but the Bulgarians and Romanians?
Regulations should be based on equality, if a million Poles were allowed into the country with no great fuss, then others should be allowed as well.

The fact that we are a small island and that we have a welfare state we can not allow a continuous influx of people in.
The alternative is to change to an American system of paying for health care etc, and a limited benefits system.
I wonder if we would attract as many immigrants if we did change?

NOOOOO it is about time the government started to restrict entry.
in fact it is longggggggg overdue.which is why we are in the state we are in,ie, shortage of housing, jobs, schools and failing services.
we are a small island that has become too crowded thanks to all the immigrants coming here, other countries have restrictions and have had them for years, so why not us.
it is time we stopped being a soft touch, ( which is why everyone comes here ).
