If you are in a multiple shunt, is the person at the back who initially caused the accident liable for the damage to all the cars involved?

The answers already given are partially correct, but it depends upon the circumstances.

A few years ago I was involved in a similar accident. I was stopped at a set of traffic lights as the traffic on the road opposite was stationary, so I couldn't cross. The car behind me was also stopped but a car approaching braked too late, hit the cat behind, who went forward and hit me.

I claimed off of the guy behind, who'd hit me. The guy behind claimed not only for the damage to his car, caused by the person hitting him, but counter-claimed against the damage he caused my car. So the guy who actually caused the accident paid for both cars to be repaired through his insurance.

Not necessarily.

Depends how it happened, but, basically, if a car stops suddenly, then 1 hits it in the rear, the driver who hot the stopped car is at fault and pays for the damage to the front car, and his own as he should not have been driving so close, and so it goes on, the next car to hit is also at fault, but would probably come to some agreement with the first guys insurance company over a %age of the cost for damage to the middle car.

I think, in the end, each drivers insurance would cover their oen vehicla, apart from the front guy, unless you were only 3rd party covered.

Then it gets complicated.

When this happened to me, the insurer asked how many shunts I 'felt' to ascertain whether the car behind me was at fault or got catapulted into me (i was the front car). I believe the basic premise is that car a claims against b, assuming b wasn't to blame b claims his costs and you're costs against c, c then claims the whole whacking lot against d, unless c hit b and then d hit c after which muddles it somewhat. It's the car that didn't stop in time that's at fault. Presumably as you are always supposed to be able to stop in time ylou are partly to fault if you plough into the wrecked vehicles aswell.

It is the last person to hit the back car who pays for it all. You have to keep a safe distance between you and the car in front therefore whoever goes into the very back of the very lsat car is the person at fault and therefore the person who pays the total bill!

each individual who went into a car in front of them is liable for the damage to the car they hit. only the person at the front will not have to pay out on their insurance.

You claim off the person who hit you. It's up to there insurance to claim that the person who hit them caused their car to subsequently hit your car. Each car hit will have to claim that way but eventually the person at the back will end up paying for it.
