I totally agree with "beautiful". Every kid has a party every year, not to mention aunts, uncles, grandparents, indulging parents, and Christmas. Ask the mom if it's OK to give something she can use. Believe me, a one-year-old will never know the difference.

Duplo or anything that encourages imagination and does make a noise. A lot of toys these days are very attractive but when it comes down to it they only do one thing and make a lot of noise doing it.

How about a personalized book? Go to this website http://tlc-expressions.com - They have titles like Sesame Street, and the child gets to be the star of the story. She can read them to him...kids love it - very cute :)

fisher price toys do well with toddlers as well as playskool. anything that will help with the creativity and learning of the child. lights and sounds are something to look for in a toy for a toddler. even like the traditional blocks toys are good. it helps them with their fine motor skills.

Anything "Little People" they'll always play with, plus you can add little things to the playsets at a time

Most kids have enough toys so i would buy something useful like clothes an diapers.
