Why is it that it is impossible to underline text on a keyboard and Microsoft word. I understand the space thingy but sometimes you need that emphasis?

You can't underline here on the internet, because underlined text is used to show that text is a link to another web page.
In Word there are 2 ways to do it; either use a keyboard shortcut, or use the icons (buttons) on the toolbar. There is a group of buttons; a B, an italic I; and a U which is underlined.
The keyboard shortcuts are Control + B for bold, Control + I for Italic and Control + U for underline.
To underline text you are about to type, press the keyboard shortcut or the toolbar button, then type the word, then press the shortcut or button again to turn it off and type normally.
To underline text you have already typed, click to the left of the first letter, then left click and drag across to highlight the text. Then use the button, then click off the text to remove the highlight. Finally make sure the button is off before you begin typing again.

If you can't see the buttons on the toolbar then they are hidden. I think you click Tools and look for the toolbar options to get them to show or hide.

You can get the New Clait (for beginners) and European Computer Driving Licence tutorials to learn how to use Microsoft Office, they're about a tenner on disc. They're also available as workbooks.
And there are tutorials on the Microsoft website.
