I am having my tonsils and adenoids removed and I am a little nervous about the pain afterwards. Especially since I am having it done only about 2 weeks before Thanksgiving...sucks so bad!! Does anyone know if I would stay in the hospital and what they will give me for pain, if anything. Thanks!!

My husband had his tonsils taken out last year and my 10 year old daughter is due to have hers removed next year. From my husbands experience you won't feel any pain during the operation but you will have a very sore throat afterwards. It may be hard for you to swallow. Usually the soreness isn't too bad to start with, but gets worse after the first day. You will be given regular doses of painkillers to help the soreness. If these don't work, it's important to tell the nurse. Being in pain can slow your recovery. Your jaw and mouth might hurt because the mouth was held wide open during the operation. Start eating as soon as you can after the operation as this helps the healing process. He stayed in hospital for just one night after his operation and was playing his PC the next. Make sure you have a good supply of pills and good luck

I had my tonsils out at 18 and that was awful. For three days I couldn't sleep or eat. I would start to sleep, but natural saliva would hit the back of my throat and that was pure misery. I don't know what adenoids are but it can't be fun having those out either. Good luck, but give yourself at least three days where your hubby or friend can take care of you. Oh yeah, and get some wicked pain killers.

I had my tonsils & adenoids removed when I was 3 years old, and had my adenoids removed AGAIN when I was 7. I remember it like it was yesterday, and sure it hurts, but for me it was no worse than having a sore throat when I have a cold.
Don't worry, it's really not that bad!

Most likely you will NOT have a hospital stay. You will probably check in in the morning and check out in the afternoon. You will most likely be told to take advil for the pain and swelling, because the pain will be minimal. Nothing to stop you from enjoying Thanksgiving. It'll pass quickly. No worries.
