When ever a person talks loudly against religion, always suspect that it is not their reason, but their passions, which have got the better of their beliefs. A bad life and a good belief are disagreeable and troublesome neighbors; and when they separate, depend on it that it is for the sake of peace and quiet.

Some people who call themselves, "Christians", don't even look at the "the book".
They may have been born into a certain faith, abandoned it for the most part, but have come to realize that of all the many religious leanings there are in the world most Christian beliefs are about kindness, taking care of others, etc. and is usually a kind of nice set of principles to follow.
Some Christians may not even belief much of what Christian churches teach these days, but they may have come around to believing that what Jesus taught wasn't such a bad way to live.
In other words, you have a too-narrow view of Christians in general. Many Christians have no wish whatsoever to "hold the progress of mankind back" and certainly have no wish to "control" anyone.

I'm a Christian and I love the progress that mankind is making..especially in tech and medicine.
what upsets me tho is no matter how advanced our society is getting...we still have people that do not tolerate others.
I admit sometimes I lash out in defense of my religion and it sometimes seems like i am myself intolerant...but thats because I get sick and tired of people asking me to prove god exists and so on...when I never ask anyone to prove he doesn't.
you have control over your own life and what you believe...
I am a Christian of my own accord..with some buddhists beliefs also...I choose to believe what I do for my own personal reasons..not because I was controlled or brainwashed.
you have the choice to decide and control your own destiny..we all do..
Everyone should chill and enjoy a beer and be grateful we have each other for the time we do....no matter what anyone believes in.

The war isn't over yet. There are still too many people who haven't woken up from the Christian dream/nightmare.
