It is the white blood cells that are trying to fight off the infection that create the white gooey stuff that looks like pus.

Pink eye is very infectious. It transfers from that white to yellow gooey stuff from one to another. I found garamycin worked well and resisted picking out the crust in the morning. Bathe each eye with its own cloth with warm water. I truly believe that you can end up with pink eye more often during allergy season. The garamycin helps get the gravel/hair feel out of the eye.

It's "conjunctivitis", and the gooey stuff is (eew) pus from the infected tear duct. Just be grateful that the tear duct isn't blocked--that's when it gets REALLY painful...
