it really sounds like ear mites. Most indoor dogs get them from cats that are allowed in and out..Your vet is the best to take care of that, as most OTC remedies are painful, and some are dangerous.
Youu can read abou thtem here, and see if it fits> http://www.vetinfo.com/dearmites.html.

Hi Rachel, Is your dog have a nasty smell to his ear? When you clean his ears did he cry alittle? If some he has ear mites and they do leave the ear looking dirty. Go to petsmart or anyother pet store and get a bottle of ear mites drops for dogs. This will clear things up in about 5-7 days it depends on how bad it is.

Ear infection! I am a groomer and I see this all the time. And yes, it can be triggered by getting water in her ears, but can also be caused by not cleaning them out often enough. For toy dogs, I reccommend a thorough cleaning using a dog ear cleaning solution from your pet store every week.
Take her to the vet immediately, she needs to go on medication to clear up the infection. It will only get worse if left untreated.

Did it come back quickly? I would be afraid of ear mites. Definately give your vet a call, if left untreated it could spread to the other ear. The other pets in the home and eventual hearing loss.

Sounds like an ear infection. She should see the vet. Cleaning it out was ok. But tke her to the vet. She may have an infection or ear mites.

since it is dark it sounds like ear mites. Does it itch? There are over-the-counter ear mite meds as well as some to buy on-line. Vet can sell you some. Treat both ears.

You shouldnt use a Q-tip, you should use a soft warm damp cloth to clean the ears. You should also use a ear cleaner regualry to prevent this from happeneing, and always dry the ears after bathing.
You need to get your dog to the vet so he can be treated for this, and then take, precautions in future.

I am not sure it this will help, but my rescue cat has about the same thing and the vet said it was a bacterial infection/virus and gave him some Tresaderm to put in his ears for 7 days. Ask your vet to get his opinion.
