Some people will consider a person an alcoholic the first drink they take, as others will say only when you need it. there are many types of alcoholism from the social alcoholic to the binge drinker and don't forget the functional alcoholic and finally the chronic alcoholic.
I am answering this question mainly because I am 1 trying to not quit but at least slow down my drinking, but I love it, I don't drink everyday like I use to. It has affected my health and life yet I continue to drink knowing that the very next drink can and most likely will kill me, so be it "cheers".
As to answer your question I will only consider myself an alcoholic, it is not my right to call someone else an alcoholic due to the circumstances they are dealing with at the moment. It is easy to consider a vagrant that would rather have a bottle of whiskey than a good meal an alcoholic, but is it true? maybe he is drinking to ease the pain of where he has ended after misfortune or the hunger or whatever.

Reliance on alcohol to function is a major point, the answer that states about "functional alcoholics" is a most mis-guided opinion, alcoholism is progressive, even if you stop for a long time and start again, you will be right back where you left off or even worse in a very short period of time. The only person who can really decide who is an alcoholic, is the individual themselves, if they think they have a problem, they probably do. If you are going to try and diagnose someone, you're in for a futile task, you cannot win an argument with a drunk, and even if you thought you did, there is a good chance they wont remember! If you are in a situation where someone you care for may have an alcohol problem in your opinion, phone a rehab clinic, AA, Al-Anon or a doctor, introduce them to someone who has had the problem, and see if they can see the similarities, if they can, then they will quite likely be able to make progress if they want to.

Many people confuse symptoms with alcoholism. You're not an alcoholic simply because you are influenced by the alcohol. You're not an alcoholic simply because you have a bad ass hangover after sobering up.
Excessive drinking doesn't even always indicate alcoholism. When a person becomes dependent upon alcohol, that's when the individual is addicted and therefore an alcoholic. When a person allows alcohol to become a priority in his/her life then he/she has become addicted and is an alcoholic.
On a side note- Not everyone who is an alcoholic ends up ruining their lives. In fact, there are many people who are what is called "functional alcoholics", people who function quite normally... go to work, lead very productive lives, maintain healthy relationships, etc... Dependency upon the alcohol affects them differently than it affects the non-functional alcoholic. I'm sure that this answer won't be a popular one when I say this... But, more often than not, functional alcoholics are even better capable of driving while under the influence than while NOT under the influence. WITHOUT alcohol, the functional alcoholic would most likely NOT maintain healthy relationships, WOULD lose his/her job, WOULD drive like an idiot, etc.....

When it gets to the point if the person stops drinking, they will die. Example: my husband's grandmother wakes up at 8 in the morning and starts drinking and doesn't quit until 10 at night when she goes to bed. If she at any point in time stopped drinking she would die. She is an alcoholic! LOL

If they let it affect their daily life or let it put their monthly bills in jeopardy.
Like continuously missing work and the pay from the hours they do work all goes for alcohol. Relationships or whatever can give ultimatims and the alcoholic will chose alcohol.
If you drink every weekend or so socially, this is not alcoholism.

hi when you turn to it for changing your mood as a habit, as the main comfort of your life. If you are not finding answers and growing as a person, but feeling bad and turning to it, you are probably on your way there, if not arrived there yet.
life can be pretty hollow, since we were wired to love and be loved. I've found the only true and unfailing love is from God thru Jesus. Ones who seek Him and find Him are way changed.
