My daughters preschool teacher told me the best gifts to give a child at 3 or 4 are those that inspire imaginary play...
kitchen (little tykes make a boy friendly version)
Dress up clothes ( knight police officer etc)
Puppet theater (some are on tension pole for doorways)
Train Table (they stimulate imaginary play)
Play House/ Cottage

I would go for something like a Fun 2 Learn Laughtop! It has letters and some fun but educational things too.. That's what i am going to get my little girl she will be 3 a couple weeks after christmas. It's for kids 3 to 7 years old made by Fisher Price! I am sure there is prolly info. about it on their website.

my son is 2 and I know he wants a train table (one of those tables about he size of a coffee table with a track etc built in) but because I feel its not so education I am opting to buy him music instruments he already has a guitar so I think a keyboard and drums. Walmart has a kids complete drum set for $14.97 and keyboard for about the same canadian dollars

Does he like Legos? They have a new Lego Duplo set with Thomas the train and friends where the kids can build the trains and set up the track to drive it on. And since it's Lego, you can add on your own buildings and stops with other Lego Duplo blocks.

How about a personalized book? Go to this website http://www.tlc-expressions.com - Kids love them because they get to be the star of the story! Educational and fun! Very cute... :)

Let him go through a toy magazine and circle what he wants. He may surprise you with what he circles. Then you can go from there.
