Is it legal for bars in Spain to refuse to serve punters if they order a non-alcoholic drink and to try and force them to drink alcohol instead? I placed an order at a bar (an Irish one as it happens) for one alcoholic drink and one orange juice, and was refused service because of the orange juice. I was told that it was 'illegal in this bar to sell non-alcoholic drinks' (which I know was a load of codswallop), and was repeatedly told that I 'had' to include alcohol in the orange juice. This went on for some minutes, with me repeating that the orange juice was to have nothing else in it. Finally, I was given both, but the barman said that he was "not happy" with that, and that he would charge me for the alcoholic drink only as the orange juice was 'pathetic'. Minutes after I had sat down again, he arrived at our table, shoved his face right in mine and said that orange juice drinkers would be banned from the bar.

Please Ladies and Gentlemen can we stick to the question in hand? In a typical Spanish bar you will not be refused service if you order a non-alcoholic drink. From a retail point of view the mark up on an orange juice is better than on "un cerveza".However as in any bar the owner can refuse you service by first refusing you admittance He or She do not have to give reasons why they will not serve you.In your scenario the barman can legally ban all orange juice drinkers just as easily as he can ban all smokers,if he were to ban on ;sex, race, religion, disability etc then he may be breaking a discrimination law.I've lived and worked in Spain for many years and have never had any trouble when i have only ordered a non-alcoholic drink , indeed some bars do a lovely espresso coffee or hot chocolate.

This is absolutely unacceptable. Were the people running & working in the bar Irish or was it just a bar claiming to be so?
I was recently at an "Irish Bar" in Paphos & we could drink water if we wanted (albeiit in a small bottle with a high price tag!). We didn't mind too much as the live entertainment was excellent.
The persons that you describe are clearly nasty, money grabbing individuals as the local alcohol would be comparitively cheap & they'd make good margins on soft drinks too.
You should name & shame the bar and report it it to the relevant authorities & tour companies.

Sounds like a nutter, Ive never been refused service for buying a soft drink in a Spanish bar. I would have told him to stick the juice up his backside and left.

Never happened to us while in Spain but they didn't appreciate my requests for a side of Clamato and my wife's request for pineapple juice. They charge through the roof for tequila and don't put any alcohol shots in coffee. Sometimes, all I really want is a Bailey's and coffee.

You should have reported him, better still you should have got him to make the drinks then walk out before he'd completed them, stating you'd changed your mind.
